Company Names in Russia

The company name is a mandatory attribute of a commercial organization. No other subject of civil legal relations, including an individual entrepreneur, is entitled to a company name.

The company name is a designation that, in the opinion of a legal entity, identifies it in the best way.

The legal entity fixes the company name in its constituent documents and submits these documents for registration to the authorized body. The trade name is entered as part of the information relating to the legal entity in the Unified State Register of Legal Entities.

A legal entity must have a full name and has the right to have an abbreviated name in Russian. It can also have a name in other languages.

There are a number of mandatory requirements that any company name must comply with:

1. The distinguishing element in the company name should not indicate the type of activity of the legal entity (for example, “soap factory,” “brick plant,” “financial company,” etc.).
2. The following may not be included in a company name:

• official names of the Russian Federation and other states;
• names of federal government bodies and local authorities;
• names of international and intergovernmental organizations;
• names of public associations; and
• designations contrary to public interests or principles of humanism and morality.

A legal entity has the exclusive right to use its company name as a means of individualization in any way that does not contradict the law.

The disposal of the exclusive right to a registered company name (including by granting another person the right to use the company name) is not allowed.
